Alcaraz advanced to the semifinals, Ciner dethroned Fritz
Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) advanced to the semi-finals of the $8.8 million Masters tennis tournament in Indian Wells (USA). Alcaraz eliminated Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada), the eighth seed, 6:4, 6:4 and remained in the fight for the first place in the world ranking, from which he will displace Novak Djokovic (Serbia) if he wins the title.
The 19-year-old Spaniard recorded his 12th win in 13 matches since returning to court in February after three and a half months of injury treatment. He took the first set in a single break in the fifth game, and in the second part he made a key break for 5:4, then closed the match on his own serve.
Alcaraz finished with 26 hits and just 8 unforced errors. "I think I played my strongest match of the season. I knew I would have chances if I did. I'm happy to move on," commented the Spaniard.
For a place in the final, he will play against number 11 Yannick Siner (Italy), who dethroned last year's champion and fourth seed Taylor Fritz (USA) 6:4, 4:6, 6:4. Siner broke early in the match and held on to win the first set, and in the second the American broke late to level.
In the decisive third set, the Italian took the opponent's serve for 5:4, then reached success with his own serve. "I tried to be aggressive and things worked out. I'm very happy with my performance. It's never easy against Taylor, especially here where he likes to play a lot. Two years ago he beat me, so I'm happy that this time I found way for me to win," Siner said.
