Benfica triumphed over Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup

Benfica is the new winner of the Portuguese Super Cup. The Primeira Liga champions were jubilant with the trophy after defeating arch-rivals and national cup winners Porto 2-0 in the final. The victory for the Lisbon Eagles was forged midway through the second half with two quick goals. Veteran Angel Di Maria opened the scoring in the 61st minute. He received a pass on the edge of the penalty area and fired into the far corner of the goal for 1:0.

The second goal came after just seven minutes. Rafa Silva then got in from the right and passed to Petar Moussa around the penalty spot, he took over and scored to make it 2-0. In added time, the "dragons" remained with a reduced squad after Pepe was sent off with a straight red card, after VAR's intervention, for a gross foul.

A minute later, Porto scored through Galeno, but again VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for handball. After that, a nervous Sergio Conceicao also saw the red card in the referee's hands and had to head to the dressing room prematurely. Thus, Benfica lifted this trophy for the 9th time in their history, leveling with their other big rival Sporting, who also have as many honors in their window. However, they remain far from the successes of Porto, who have 23 Super Cups.
