Carlos Alcaraz received the Sports Oscar for Breakthrough of the Year

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz won the Laureus Award for Breakthrough of the Year. The ceremony for awarding the "Sports Oscars" took place on Monday evening in the French capital, Paris.

Alcaraz is the fourth ATP Tour player to receive the honor after Marat Safin (2001), Rafael Nadal (2006) and Andy Murray (2013). This is also the second year in a row that a tennis player has won the award, following Emma Radukanu in 2022.

"Thank you for this Laureus Award for World Breakthrough of the Year!," wrote Alcaraz on Twitter. "Thank you to the Academy and everyone who made this possible. And, of course, congratulations to all the winners and nominees!"

2022 was a historic year for Alcaraz, who won his first Grand Slam title, triumphing at the US Open and becoming the youngest world No. 1. The other nominees for the award were Elena Rybakina, Morocco's men's soccer team, figure skater Nathan Chen and track and field star Toby Amusan.

Other tennis players who had nominations for the Laureus Awards were Rafael Nadal for the men's Sportsman of the Year, a category won by Lionel Messi, and Iga Šviontek for the Sportswoman of the Year, an award that went to track and field athlete Shelley-Anne Fraser - Price.
