Cavani and Boca beat on penalties again

Boca Juniors advanced to the semi-finals of the Copa Argentina after beating Taleres on penalties in a quarter-final clash. Regular time at the Mendoza Stadium ended 1-1 after Gaston Benavidez gave Talerez the lead in the 22nd minute and Edinson Cavani restored parity with a fine penalty in the 58th minute. It was against the Uruguayan striker that the offense was committed.

Before the break, Cavani twice wanted a penalty for the "Genoese", as the opponent's players twice stopped the ball with their hands after hits by Boca players, but these were not judged. The Buenos Aires giants were the better team on the pitch but missed a number of chances and Cavani certainly had an off day and squandered a great chance to score his first hat-trick for the club. The scorer was simply unrecognizable in front of the opponent's goal, and even the commentators of the match joked that this was not the real Cavani.

After the tie in regular time, it came to a penalty shoot-out, where Boca emerged victorious again this season. Dario Benedetto gave the Genoese the lead and Nauel Bustos fired over the bar before Nicolas Figal extended Boca's lead. Diego Barrera reduced and Cavani made it 3-1 on penalties, after which Benavides also fired over Romero's goal. The young talent Valentin Barko was also accurate for his team and Boca won with a total score of 5:2.

So Boca Juniors continues to chase its fifth Copa Argentina and first since 2020, first meeting Estudiantes in the semi-finals. As is well known, the "blue and yellow" have emerged victorious in three consecutive Copa Libertadores encounters from penalty kicks this season and reached the final of South America's most important club tournament without a win in regular time in either one of six matches between the round of 16 with Olimpia Asuncion, the quarter-final with Racing and the semi-final with Palmeiras.
