Dominic Thiem started with a win in Madrid and Andy Murray dropped out


Dominic Thiem started with a victory in the tennis tournament of the "Masters" series on clay in the Spanish capital Madrid with a prize fund of 7.7 million euros. The former world No. 3 defeated Britain's Kyle Edmund 6:4, 6:1 in 84 minutes after making four breaks.

Thiem won the US Open in 2020, but then had a series of injuries and is yet to return to his optimal sporting form. The Austrian, who is a two-time finalist in Madrid, has secured a second-round match against world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

The former number 1 in the world - the British Andy Murray, dropped out at the start after defeating the Italian Andrea Vavasori with 6:2, 7:6(7).

In other intriguing matches, Argentina's Tomas Martin Echeverri eliminated France's Andrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-0, Chile's Christian Garin defeated Switzerland's Marc-Andrea Hüsler 7-6(5), 6-2, and Germany's Jan-Lennard Schruff beat Lorenzo Sonego from Italy 6:3, 6:1.

The outcome was happy for another Italian - Marco Cecchinato. He moves on after a success over Marton Fucovic from Hungary with 7:6(4), 6:3. Meanwhile, Australia's Christopher O'Connell won against Serbia's Filip Krainovic 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.
