Liverpool are dreaming of a miracle against their nightmare Real Madrid
Real Madrid hosts Liverpool in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti's side have a solid lead after playing a fantastic game at Anfield, where they won 5-2, despite two early goals for the Merseysiders. "The Whites" have been a nightmare for the English club for some time.
They have won six of the last seven matches between the two sides, and two of those came in the final of the club's most prestigious tournament. Real struggled after the win at Anfield, drawing twice in La Liga and losing 1-0 to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. The team returned to winning ways a few days ago when they won 3:1 against Espanyol.
Before the meeting, the Catalans talked about problems in attack, but the motivation of the team in the championship is not particularly great, since the team is nine points behind Barca and their chances for the first place are not great.
The White ballet has progressed on 26 of the 27 occasions they have won the first leg away from home. The only exception is the relegation by Ajax in 2019. The Whites have not conceded more than one goal in a home game since April last year, when they lost 2-3 at Chelsea, but they still eliminated the Londoners.
After losing to Real, Liverpool drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace before beating Wolverhampton and thrashing Manchester United 7-0. However, the great success over the "Red Devils" was followed by a loss to Bournemouth, who were last in the Premier League before this meeting. This failure took the Merseysiders out of the top four and significantly complicated their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League.
Karim Benzema missed the meeting with Espanyol but has resumed training with the team and is expected to be available for the clash. David Alaba, who was injured in the first leg, is also already training but will miss the match. The good news for Ancelotti is the recovery of Ferland Mendy, who could be preferred on the left side of the defense if he is in optimal condition.
Liverpool are without the injured Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara. The situation with the team got complicated after yesterday's training was missed by captain Jordan Henderson and Stefan Bajcetic. Both will miss the match in Madrid.
