Manchester United's management have made their position clear to Greenwood

Mason Greenwood and the management of Manchester United have held lengthy talks in which both parties have made their positions quite clear. According to the Daily Mail, the player, who has a contract with the club until 2025, has expressed his desire to return to the team as soon as possible.

However, club chiefs have told him that cannot happen this season because the internal investigation the club launched after the Crown Prosecution Service surprisingly dropped all charges against Greenwood in early February must first be completed.

The investigation in question cannot be completed before the summer, so at best the 21-year-old striker could return for next season. According to the Daily mail, the club are divided over Greenwood's possible return to the team.

The sports and technical management believes that the talent should be given a second chance, but in the commercial department they are of the opinion that this will damage the reputation of the club. Sponsors dropped Greenwood when the allegations were initially made, and the jersey bearing his number was withdrawn from sale altogether.

Greenwood continues to receive his £70,000-a-week salary. By the end of his contract, he is due to collect another eight million pounds and if the club decide to fire him, he will most likely have to pay him the full amount.

Manchester United are currently refusing to comment. However, it is almost certain that the internal investigation is unlikely to end with a decision that Greenwood is completely innocent of the allegations of physical abuse against his gilfriend Harriet Robson.

The two have gotten back together and are even expecting a child, and it's clear to all that it was this development that led to the charges against Greenwood being dropped, as his girlfriend, who was the key witness in the case, withdrew.
