Marseille were left without a coach ahead of the clashes with Ajax and PSG
Marseille's Spanish coach Marcelino, who took over the team in the summer, "will not continue his mission", the French club announced. The events of Monday, when associations of supporters of the club demanded the resignation of president Pablo Longoria "do not allow Marcelino and his team to carry out in good conditions the function for which they were engaged. Given the context, the club is very disappointed to have to do without coach and technical staff," Marseille said in a statement. The departure of the 58-year-old coach was made official a day before the team's Europa League opener against Ajax and four days before the Ligue 1 derby against Paris Saint-Germain.
Marcelino was invited by Longoria to take the coaching position vacated by the Croatian Igor Tudor only ten days before the start of training and shortly before the matches with Panathinaikos in the Champions League, after which the team was eliminated from the tournament. He led Marseille in just seven games (3 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss). The specialist arrived at the team as a free agent after spending 18 months at Athletic Bilbao. He also worked at Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia, where he won the Copa del Rey in 2019. According to sources close to the club, former Marseille player Jacques Abardonado should be on the bench for the match against Ajax on Thursday.
