Napoli and Fiorentina will boycott the Italian Super Cup
Two of the four teams due to take part in the first edition of Italy's new Supercoppa format are considering whether to boycott the mini-tournament, according to Italian media. It is about Serie A champion Napoli and Coppa Italia finalist Fiorentina. As you know, the teams that have the right to challenge for the Super Cup are Napoli, Fiorentina, the Cup winner Inter and the silver medalist in the championship Lazio. The matches will take place in Saudi Arabia, as last week they were postponed, so instead of being played between January 4 and 8, it will take place between January 21 and 25.
However, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is against the new dates due to their proximity to the Champions League last 16, and also dislikes the idea of the Arab side hosting, especially given the war between Israel and Hamas. Fiorentina have supported the concerns of the "partenopeia" and are also ready to withdraw from their participation. Serie A have responded by linking up with last season's fourth and fifth in the Italian top flight, AC Milan and Atalanta respectively, with the two teams set to replace Napoli and Fiorentina if they do indeed refuse to play for the Super Cup.
