A penalty in the 90th minute blew up the Superclasico and sparked a melee with 7 red cards

The River Plate side pulled off one of their craziest wins against arch-rivals Boca Juniors. The victory came with the minimum 1:0 in a meeting of the 15th round of the Argentine League Professional, and the only goal came after a controversial penalty, realized by Miguel Borja (90' + 4').

The win cemented River Plate as the sole leaders of the Argentine championship, while Boca Juniors are in mid-table in 13th place. Otherwise, the Supeclasico was held for the first time at the renovated "Monumental", which became the largest stadium in South America after its reconstruction, and gathered over 83 thousand fans.

The match was headed for a goalless draw when, in stoppage time, passions heated to the limit and the referee gave his final signal more than 20 minutes after the end of regular time. In the 92nd minute, Augustin Sandes stepped sharply into the legs of his opponent and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

And that was just the beginning. The penalty was realized by Miguel Borja, and this blew up the crowded "Monumental". However, the fuse was also lit on the pitch and a veritable melee ensued in which both staffs were active, with substitutes such as Paulo Diaz and Marcos Rojo coming on straight from the paint bench.

All this happened while top scorer Borja was showing off a shirt in homage to God, celebrating the penalty. Then River Plate's reserve, Palavechino, shouted at Boca's staff and this provoked the scandal that led to the suspension of the game for 16 minutes. The referee showed a total of 7 red cards - four for field players and three for people from the benches.
