Wayne Rooney is the new manager of Birmingham City

Former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has officially been appointed manager of Birmingham City. Waza, who left DC United on Sunday after terminating his contract by mutual consent, has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract. On Monday, Birmingham sacked John Eustace, despite the team winning two consecutive games in their last two games, and immediately began negotiations with the 37-year-old Englishman.

Rooney's squad includes his former national team-mate Ashley Cole, who is currently an assistant with England Under-21s, John O'Shea, who also plays the same role for the Republic of Ireland, as well as Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleward, who were on his team and at D.C. United. Birmingham are currently sixth in the Championship.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time. I have built my management career thus far, putting myself in challenging environments to be prepared for this opportunity. It's a project that gives me a sense of purpose, and I can't wait to get started. I have a clear plan that I want the team to play and my coaching staff and I will work hard to make it happen," Rooney said.
